when we heard pompeya for the first time and were told they were from moscow, we were like: - what!? are you kidding? this is probably the first russian band singing in english with such a classy brit touch and male vocal being very strong and sophisticated at the same time. they jestingly describe their style as >melodramatic popular song< and >cheenese< is indeed a very dramatic piece with simple yet powerful composition and lyrics that really make big sense. the original is very well supported by a bunch of remixes each of which is unique on its own. an-2 & samos come with a warm, relaxed and funky instrumental version which is followed by a blockbuster mix from moscow disquo maestro leonid lipelis (an entirely perfect dance version of the original that could ever exist) and finally, for those few sirs and mesdames who are not yet aesthetically satisfied and who still find themselves seated while others jump and shout, here come d-pulse with their paranoid mix that gathers the thunderclouds to the full darkness and - at the end - lets the revival sunbeams break through.

fresh from the success of his new album, ninja tuna, mr scruff dips his line back in the sea with the funktabulous get on down. taking a little chunk of 70s soul goodness (a prince phillip mitchell song, sung by johnny adams) and turning it into scruffy sashimi, this is undoubtedly one of the dancefloor stand outs of an album guaranteed to get any crowd bumping. hold on, on the other hand, features the smooooth vox of andreya triana, but nothing can stop scruff from dropping lashings of bass squelch - plus a little extra bangingness on the alternate version hold the dub. altogether uplifting, chest vibrating and all round marvellous, this is brit soul the way it should be done.

osbornes ruling came out on influential us label spectral sound earlier this year, and has been racking up some fantastic support already. an emotive piece of lush deep house, ruling is an unashamed throwback to the early halcyon days of chicago and new york house music. a perfect slice of deepness for the warmer months...shur i kan is becoming ever present on the nrk roster of late, hes one of our favourite brit producer/remixers, and he stays faithfull to the original mix of ruling here but drags it onto the dancefloor somewhat with some stronger beats and heavier bottom end. king britt, meanwhile, opts for a heady, darker pounding drum remix, with spacious chords and freeform jazz flicked riffs. a little scubambient mix is also included here...

arctic monkeys were already massive way before they inked a deal with domino in june 2005. people obsessing over the songs? sold out gigs full of stage diving nutcases. hardcore fans pressed up against venue windows, just hoping to catch a glimpse such checkpoints have all been ticked. the boys may share a love of the smiths, the clash and the jam, but in no way were the monkeys ready to simply regurgitate the well trodden brit rock path.
